This event, held in May at the Lindsay Exhibition Fairgrounds, features various demonstrations, displays and activities all aimed at helping visitors learn more about this splendid animal that we call "HORSE". In the "Exhibition Building" you'll find plenty of displays featuring the latest in equestrian products, equipment and tack. In the main show ring, demonstrations take place. Interested crowds can learn everything from the training of young horses to the displaying of horsemanship. In the horse barn you'll be able to be "up close and personal" with your favourite friends! At the Grandstand there are also plenty of activities. The most popular of which is the "Extreme Rodeo". If you love horses, it's "All About Horses"!

Event Advertising & Promotion – Rating 4

All About Horses is well promoted through its website, television and radio ads, newspapers and the internet. I was disappointed this year, when I went to their website to find that there were no admission prices or times. This might well be the result of timing. The event takes place at the end of May, so perhaps event and pricing haven't been confirmed yet. This is likely the answer. Other then that small glitch, everything else was very well done, including the "Handout" we received when we entered the grounds.

Curb Appeal - Rating 5

Lindsay Exhibition Fairgrounds are very impressive. We approached the grounds westbound on Hwy #7 and passed several large buildings. Even the entrance roadway into the grounds is impressive. There was good directional signage as we came in to Lindsay. The grounds have plenty of "close by" free parking and the All About Horses staff directing traffic were friendly and efficient. The event pricing was all inclusive and quite reasonable.

Festival Site & Activities - Rating 5

The fairgrounds are large and clean, with plenty of space between buildings. This allows for excellent traffic flow. There could be some accessibility challenges if the grounds became too wet. All About Horses did provide a (you've got it!) horse-drawn people mover! In the exhibition building, where equine products and services were being displayed, there was a nice eating area with good food. The washrooms were clean and conveniently found. The show ring, which is located west of the exhibition building, held events that help educate All About Horses visitors. When we visited, Randy Bird, aka, the Canadian Horse Whisperer was demonstrating how he trained his horses. Other interesting demonstrations came later, including the Canadian Cowgirls. In the horse building Judi and I were able to walk amongst "the Giants". Other activities during All About Horses included horse-drawn wagon displays, riding demonstrations and, the Extreme Rodeo. The event, the year we visited, featured Terry Grant, aka THE MANTRAKER, Judi's new BFF!

Festival Theme – Rating 5

This event certainly lived up to its "All About Horses" theme. The entire event contained plenty of activities, displays and demonstrations devoted to our equine friends.

Final Thoughts - Overall Rating 5

This was a great event that included lots of interesting events and displays. All About Horsesis a specialty event gear towards people who are interested in learning more horses. However, All About Horse is presented in such a way that it appeals not only to the "hardcore" enthusiasts but also to all people, adults and children, who just love the beauty and majesty of this magnificent animal. Judi and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, especially when we walked through the large horse building and became "up close and personal".

NOTE ~ A word of caution, however, the rating and evaluation are the "opinions" of the writers and don’t necessarily reflect those of the readers. Also, we do not attend an event for its entire duration. Our visits are only a “snap shot in time”. We would encourage readers to “discover” each event for themselves. Each year, on July 1st, Lang Pioneer Village celebrations "Historic Dominion Day". Dominion Day is one of Lang's special events and attracts visitors from all over the Kawarthas and beyond! The event includes pioneer demonstrations throughout the village as well as special activities for the whole family. Activities include a horse drawn wagon ride, lots of music, crafts for kids and the cutting and eating of a giant Birthday Cake! There are also special features, such as an Dominion Day parade, a re-enactment of a skirmish between the "Fenian Brotherhood" and "British soldiers" and, of course, a speech by our first Prime Minister, Sir John A. First and foremost through its own website. They also use other internet sites to promote all their special events. Lang's General Manager, Joe Corrigan, is deeply involved with the area's tourism programs and markets this special event through the various media available. At each event, they give each visitor a program guide that describes event's activities and times.

Curb Appeal - Rating 5

The way to Lang Pioneer Village is well marked. Signs, including mileage, are posted along all the major roadways leading to the village. At the village they have a large parking lot with accessibility parking near the visitor centre. Once you enter the visitor centre, you are greeted by friendly staff who accept admission fees and hand out program guides. The cost for each special event varies, but good value is received. Nearby Peterborough offers out-of-town visitors plenty of food and accommodation choices.

Festival Site & Activities - Rating 4

Lang Pioneer Village is laid out in such a way that visitors can logically follow the dirt roads to each of the village's heritage buildings. During special events most of the buildings have historical interpreters. During Historic Dominion Daydisplays and interpretations emphasized Canada's "Living History", especially with the parade lead by Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald and his later, stirring speech! The village does have a couple of challenges, washrooms and accessibility to some buildings. The washrooms are a challenge because they are only located at the Village's entrance. Because of the nature of the property, placing permanent washrooms around the village is not an option. The problem could possibly be addressed by placing "portable washrooms" in such a way that they don't take away from the heritage nature of the Village. Perhaps they could be made to look like "outhouses". Just an idea. The other challenge is accessibility. This challenge is a little more difficult but I think most buildings could be made more accessible. It has been accomplished in other Pioneer Villages but the cost, here, may be prohibitive.

Festival Theme – Rating 5

Over the past couple of years, Judi and I have visited other Canada Day celebrations. Lang's Historic Dominion Day brought back some of the pageantry that must have taken place during Canada's initial years. This was definitely a great place and way to spend Canada day.

Final Thoughts - Overall Rating 5

As I have mentioned, the activities at the Lang Pioneer Village Historic Dominion Daywere great. I especially enjoyed and appreciated General Manger Joe Corrigan's portrayal of Sir. John A. Lang Pioneer Village is a first class facility that offers families a wonderful way to learn about Canada's incredible history and the people who worked so hard to make it that way. Lang events are engaging, educational and well organized. This attention to detail, along with their dedicated volunteers, make Lang Pioneer Villagean authentic trip to Canada's and the area's past

Whatever you decide, remember that Ontario festivals and events are the best and so are their event organizers and their volunteers. This is a well attended event that encompasses the entire village plus an awesome Maple Sugar Bush and Farm located away from the town. The event includes "shuttle wagon" services from nearby parking areas. The main downtown street is full of event vendors offering everything from great food to unique maple products. Just off the main street, all day pancake breakfast are being served. Close to the Pancake tented area kids can enter an old fashioned barn and learn about farm animals. Other parts of the town include a Craft Show, an Antique Show, a small Carnival/Midway , A Toy Sale and a Super Dog Show. All in all, it is a well run event that offers families plenty to do and see.

Event Advertising & Promotion – Rating 5

The Elmira Maple Syrup Festivalhas an easy to use comprehensive website that includes pricing and event descriptions. It also includes such things as an event list and schedule, area information, directions to the event, activity descriptions and an event history. When we arrived, we were given an event program guide along with instructions on how to best enjoy the festival.

Curb Appeal - Rating 4

Finding a parking spot was a bit of a problem. This was both "bad" and "good". It was "bad" because like most of the events we attend there were very few directional signs. This is such an easy fix. It's amazing that most events still don't think directional sign are important, especially for out-of-town visitors. It was "good" for the organizers, because it was a beautiful day and there were a large number of people wanting to visit the event. This caused traffic tie-ups and full parking lots. I believe that the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival organizers did everything they could to alleviate this challenge, but the great weather beat them a little. Once we finally found a parking spot in one of the official parking lots, we were able to board one of the many "shuttle" wagons. The wagons took us right to the downtown area. It's unfortunate that the shuttle weren't "access friendly". Because of the terrain and the type of festival, it is not an easy fix.

Festival Site & Activities - Rating 4

As I mentioned in my introduction, the Elmira Maple Syrup Festivalis a well run event with plenty to do. I think the highlight for us may have been the Pancake Breakfast. Even though there were large numbers of people in line for pancakes, we were feed quickly and efficiently. The event is spread out, so be prepared for a fair amount of walking. On the downtown street there was a good mixture of vendors and activities. One challenge, especially because of the large number of visitors, was the pathways running on either side of the vendor booths. People tried to push their way in two directions. This caused a considerable bottleneck. We felt sorry for families with strollers or carriages for their small children. Again, this hard to control because of the shear number of people. A hard challenge for the organizers! Other than the downtown bottleneck, pathways were clear and easy to use. All of the activities were well organized and well attended. Each had a clear theme, so that visitors could pick and choose what they wanted to see. It was a long bus ride to the Festival's Sugar Bush, but once we got there it was well worth the trip. When we arrived, a fresh batch of "kettle popcorn" was being bagged. Inside the Sugar Shack, the steam from the boilers filled the air!

Festival Theme – Rating 5

The theme of the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival is, of course, Maple Syrup and the festival organizers made sure that the theme was carried out throughout the even ~ the vendors selling maple products, the Pancake Breakfast and the Sugar Bush and Sugar Shack all enhanced the theme of the event, as does the timing of the event.

Final Thoughts - Overall Rating 5

It was a long drive from Cobourg to Elmira and the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival, but the drive was well worth it. Judi and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I think my one reoccurring thought was how family friendly the festival was. There were plenty of activities for kids, from animal farm to yummy pancakes; an outdoor carnival/midway to a supper dog show and a fun Toy Sale to a trip to a Sugar Bush, plus a lot more! Adult family members weren't left out either, the vendor area, the Craft Show, the Antique Show and, the PANCAKES! Maple Syrup Festivals, in general, start the spring off right! The Elmira Maple Syrup Festival, especially with great weather, not only makes for a great spring start but helps the winter blues fade into the past!

NOTE ~ A word of caution, however, the rating and evaluation are the "opinions" of the writers and don’t necessarily reflect those of the readers. This event is the harbinger of bright sunny days and of rejuvenation! The event is held at Toronto's Direct Energy Centre located on the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) grounds. Once inside the building it's almost impossible to know where to look! There is so much to see! We visited Canada Blooms with our friends Barb and Laurence Stephenson. Barb, an avid gardener, had volunteered at past shows, so she was able to show us around. Part of the show is made up of spectacular displays ~ floral and landscape, while the other part is made up of hundreds of vendors offering an array of products and ideas. The event is laid out in such a way that a visitor can enjoy just the display or the whole show. In 2012 Canada Blooms and the National Home Show are joining together to form the largest Home & Garden Show in North America.

Website Link- Canada Blooms - visit Canada Blooms!

Ontario Festivals Visited Article Link - Canada Blooms

Event Advertising & Promotion – Rating 5

As you might expect, the promotion of Canada Blooms was top notch. Their website was complete, easy to navigate and informative. Event promotion included radio and television commercials along with newspaper ads. Because of the size and scope of the event, organizers were able to attract plenty of media coverage. One aspect that Judi and I thought well done, was the handouts given at the entrance.

Curb Appeal - Rating 5

If you are going to have an event in Toronto, you can't beat the CNE. They have excellent buildings, especially the Direct Energy Centre and lots of parking (we parked conveniently in the underground parking area). Just outside the show, visitors could check their winter coats at numerous "Coat Checks". As we walked into the show, we were greeted by recognizable show personnel who handed out "bags of goodies". Considering the type and expanse of the show and where it is located, the cost to visit Canada Blooms is great value.

Festival Site & Activities - Rating 5

It's difficult to describe in words the entrance to the show! Breathtaking does not do it justice! The designers of the entrance take a great deal of pride, each year, to made the entrance even better than the year before! Once inside, the visual experience continues! It was amazing to watch our friend Laurence, an enthusiastic photographer, flit from floral display to floral display. It was like watching a worker bee pollinating all the flowers in a garden! Once we had passed through the floral displays, it was on to the landscaping displays. More eye "candy". The great part of the show that is completely accessible for all. The layout was well thought-out and easy to manoeuvers, event with the crowds. There were plenty of resting spaces for us "old folks" to "sit and rest a spell". After the landscaping displays, came Canada Blooms' Marketplace. I am pretty sure that anything you wanted, that had to do with flowers or landscaping, you could find amongst the sea of unique vendors. Another great aspect of the show was that it didn't exclude kids from enjoying the event. There were a number of "kid friendly" areas where children of all ages could roam and discover. Event the food was well placed and there was a good variety offered.

Festival Theme – Rating 5

The theme and the timing of Canada Blooms is excellent. March is a month where we Canadian start to get restless for spring and the warmer weather! This event is a perfect entry way to "April showers bring May flowers".

Final Thoughts - Overall Rating 5

As you can see from all of the ratings, Judi and I thought that this was one of the best events visited last year and perhaps ever. The event was well organized and fun to walk through and discover. Canada Blooms' division of displays versus marketplace offers visitors the choice of just enjoying the "prelude to spring" or "jumping in with both feet" and buying all the neat things necessary to make your property the best it can be! The show also includes lots of opportunities to learn, as the it offers a number of "Special Events", featuring Canada's top experts. If you and your garden are in need of a "spring tune-up", this is the show for you!

NOTE ~ A word of caution, however, the rating and evaluation are the "opinions" of the writers and don’t necessarily reflect those of the readers. Also, we do not attend an event for its entire duration. Our visits are only a “snap shot in time”. It is a festival for food and wine lovers! It also includes silent and live auctions. I visited this event with my daughter, Ainsley Brush, and we both had a great time! The event is held in a local nursery and is set up for tasting and sampling. Even the entrance way is enticing. It is an event that captures the spirit of the Niagara Region and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Niagara Passion is a well run event, organized by the Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake as a fund-raiser.

Event Advertising & Promotion – Rating 4

Niagara Passion has an excellent website that contains the information needed to understand and enjoy the event. The website also contains links to local wineries, accommodations, restaurants and the Shaw Festival. You can also learn more about the event through their "Facebook Page".

Curb Appeal - Rating 5

As I mentioned, the event is held in a Niagara Region nursery and is situated in wine country. The nursery, with all its greenery and colours enhanced the charm of the event. Off site parking had been arranged and transportation for the visitors to the nursery was available immediately. As we walked through the picturesque entryway, we were met by festival staff who handed us a wine glass, a unique plate that allowed for carrying our wine glass, a clothe napkin and an event guide instructing us how to enjoy the event. Event staff were easily recognizable with their bright red event shirts.

Festival Site & Activities - Rating 5

The nursery was set up to make the most of the space available. As we entered the festival through the nursery doors, we entered a different world! The large open space was organized to suit the mood of the event. In the middle of the space, chairs and tables were set up with a stage at one end. Entertainers were performing when we arrived. Many of the tables had umbrellas to protect visitors from the sun. On two sides of the seating area there were food and wine stations, each featured either local wines or foods. It was all very well organized. Guests were lined up at each station eagerly awaiting their "sampling". There was also an area displaying items that could be purchased in a “silent auction”. While we were still there, an auctioneer took the stage and started "calling" a "live Auction". The audience responded enthusiastically.

Festival Theme – Rating 5

Niagara Regionis known world-wide for its superb wines, the Shaw Festival, its delicious fruits and its gourmet food. Niagara Passion shows off Niagara's wines and foods and brings to life the "passion" that has made Niagara famous!

Final Thoughts - Overall Rating 5

Traveling to Niagara-on-the Lake from Cobourg is not always an easy trip. Fortunately, this time, we made our way with little hold up. Once we arrived at the event and park our car, we were immediately whisked from the "offsite" parking to the Niagara Passion location. There, we were greeted by enthusiastic volunteers who tasting utensils and instructions. Inside the event grounds everything was set-up for easy access to both seating and sampling. Music was playing as we entered. The Passion guests were lined up to receive their favourite wine or food. Volunteers, in their "red festival shirts" were available to answer questions. All-in-all, this was a delightful event, especially if you like good food and wine and a charming unique setting! This was one the best events visited in 2011.

NOTE ~ A word of caution, however, the rating and evaluation are the "opinions" of the writers and don’t necessarily reflect those of the readers. The two streets feature vendors, exhibits and music. If you walk east down one of the many side roads you’ll reach Riverdale Park and its eccentric Art Show and if you walk a little further, you’ll find the Riverdale Farm Zoo. I think one of the most unique features of the festival is that the whole neighborhood seemed to become involved. Many of the homes feature garage sales and private art shows. Young entrepreneurs sell fresh homemade lemonade and treats along the way. (Website Link - Cabbagetown Festival)

Event Advertising & Promotion – Rating 4

The festival's website is a bit confusing. The main show is run by the Cabbagetown BIA, but there are other events that run currently. The BIA website does promote these events, but there are other websites that also promote. It becomes a little confusing. However, the BIA does produce an excellent Event Guide which explains each of the events and activities. It is comprehensive and informative.

Curb Appeal - Rating 3

This is the kind of event that evokes different emotions. It depends on how you feel about the older parts of a large city. To me, I found it quite exciting, especially when we walked through the residential part. The homes and properties were very well cared for! The park, as with most city events was problematic. We did manage to find a parking spot, but it was quite some distance away. This is a difficult problem to solve with this type of event. The best way to get to it is via public transit (TTC). The other problem was lack of signage, both directional and informational. I’m not sure if the City of Toronto allows directional signage for an event. If it does the committee might consider placing some in the strategic areas.

Festival Site & Activites - Rating 4

Perhaps everyone won’t agree with me, but I found the festival site both interesting and exciting. With the site being as large as it was, there were lots to see and do. The music on the main street definitely added to the ambiance of the event. With an event such as this, there was plenty of walking involved. Fortunately the weather was great, so finding shelter from the sun was not a problem. If it had been raining, it could have been. Although there was a good crowd in attendance, the pedestrian flow did not seem hectic. The main streets had been closed off, so there was plenty of room to move. Washrooms were a challenge, however, I was able to use a washroom in one of the retail stores.

Festival Theme – Rating 5

The Theme, of course, was Cabbagetown and the festival took place in “Cabbagetown”, so not much to criticize here. I think that if you expand the definition to include the Cabbagetown residents and business, I would have to say the theme was excellent! The residents seem to really embrace the spirit of the event. It just seemed to enhance our enjoyment!

Final Thoughts – Overall Rating 5

The Cabbagetown Festival has been entertaining visitors for many yeas and it is definitely worth a trip to Toronto. To make your visit as pleasurable as possible, I have two suggestions. The first is to take public transit to Cabbagetown and the second is to wear good walking shoes. If you heed both of these, you will have a great time!

NOTE ~ A word of caution, however, the rating and evaluation are the "opinions" of the writers and don’t necessarily reflect those of the readers. The fair is held each year in October. It is a comprehensive fair that includes named entertainment, agricultural exhibits and displays, farm animals, horse racing, loads of vendors and an awesome Midway. It also features special events such as top notch cooking shows to high divers. (Website Link - Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show)

Event Promotion – Rating 5

The Fair has a great website that includes information about their annual fair plus other events that are held at the fairgrounds. There Event Guide is simple but informative. It includes event information plus the dates and times the events take place and location.

Curb Appeal - Rating 3

Part of the Curb Appeal is being able to find the fairgrounds. For anyone coming from out-of-town, the grounds are difficult to find and unfortunately the directional signage is poor. This problem could easily be solved with strategically placed signage. The other challenge we experienced was the traffic flow into the grounds. I know that this is a difficult problem to solve, but it does posse a certain amount of frustration for fair visitors. Perhaps it’s a by-product of their success! The fairgrounds and the fair, itself, is very good! Even though many of the building are older, they seem to be well maintained.

Festival Site - Rating 4

The layout of the fair is typical. There are lots of buildings to walk through with plenty of different vendors, displays and exhibits to enjoy. It has a grandstand that features horseracing during the day and big names entertainment at night. There is also a newer building that features well known Chefs cooking up delicious dishes. There is a lot of walking needed, if you want to take in the entire fair. The one aspect I was a little disappointed in were the washrooms. I found them far apart and not well marked. Again, good signage would help solve the problem. Of course, my age and tiny bladder may have played a roll in this assessment.

Festival Theme – Rating 5

The Theme, of course, is County Fair, and the Norfolk County Fair has it all, from farm animals, to the agricultural displays and the giant pumpkins, the fair had it all!

Final Thoughts – Overall Rating 5

This is one of the largest fairs in Ontario. It has plenty to offer, so you’ll need lots of time to see everything. Plan on attending for the whole day. The evening entertainment is excellent! We would definitely recommend a visit to the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show!

NOTE ~ A word of caution, however, the rating and evaluation are the "opinions" of the writers and don’t necessarily reflect those of the readers. We are going to rate each event in five (5) different areas:

EVENT PROMOTION~ Includes event websites, advertising/promotion, media ads and coverage, and the program guides.

CURB APPEAL ~ Includes event location, parking, traffic control, signage, event admission staff, fees and provisions for out-of-town visitors

FESTIVAL SITE~ Includes event set-up, accessibility, layout, weather proofing, crowd control, food, quality of vendors and attractions, washroom facilities, hours, garbage, recycle, first aid, child care and “green” provisions.

FESTIVAL THEME~ Includes theme uniqueness, appropriateness, timing and attraction

FINAL THOUGHTS ~ Includes event appeal, size and scope, attendance, organization, and event staff.

Each "Evaluation" area will have a rating of between 1 and 5 points, with "5" being the highest rating. With each rating, we will give a brief summary of how we arrived at the rate. We will also give an overall rating to the event, with an explanation of why that rating.

Whatever you decide, remember that Ontario festivals and events are the best and so are their event organizers and their volunteers. Anything can determine how an event appears at any given time ~ weather, time, unforeseen circumstances, etc. Always keep an open mind and if you have a suggestion or concern about an event, let the organizers know. They will appreciate your input.

(Next Week - Rating the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show)

The Rating Game

As I have written in a previous Blog (Gary’s Blog), Judi and I don’t formally evaluate or rate the festivals and events we visit. We do, however, have “opinions” and to lessen the tedium of long trips, we have developed an “Event Evaluator”. The “Evaluator” helps us organize our thoughts into clear sections - Promotion, Curb Appeal, Site Layout, Event Theme, and Miscellaneous Final Thoughts. It’s not a “scientific” evaluation, but it suits our “discussions”. I can’t say that we always agree, but that’s natural when we have two different sets of eyes and minds taking in the sights and sounds of festivals. Over the past 5 years, Judi and I have visited over 250 festivals and events, and we have, to some degree, discussed each one of them. We even have written “Event Evaluators” on many of them. Also, for most of these 5 years I have written more than 200 Adventures of the Festival NomadBlogs. In them, I write about the events we have visited, the people we have met and the communities we have discovered. However, I have not, once, rated or evaluated any of the events we have visited … that is, until now! Starting in two weeks, I am going to begin a new series … FESTIVAL/EVENT RATING. Since we don't visit many events during the winter months, I will be beginning the series by rating some of the events we visited last year. To begin things off, the first Festival/Event to be rated will be the NORFOLK COUNTY FAIR & HORSE SHOW. Next week I will explain how our "RATING" system works.

(Continued)

2012... Her first interview with Melanie Fernandez of the Toronto Harbourfront Centre started it off. Judi appreciated all the information provided by Melanie. Her interview with Terry Grant, AKA The Mantracker, was very exciting, especially when he gave her a ‘BIG’ hug (sigh). And her interview with Ontario’s Minister of Tourism and Culture, Michael Chan, gave us insight into Ontario’s tourism future. The second Blog that was started this year was “Ontario Tales”. This blog tells stories about Canadians who have made Ontario a fascinating place to live! The current story is about William Leonard Hunt, better known as The Great Farini. The story is based on Canadian author, Shane Peacock's book, "The Great Farini, the High-Wire Life of William Hunt". Shane is in the process of completing his children's mystery series of The Boy Sherlock Homes.

In June, we changed the name and the look of our monthly newsletter (now THE INSIDER). We wanted to reflect the changes and additions to our website group. At the same time we changed the “look” of the front pages of all our websites. We wanted to make the websites easier to use and access information.

All of the above changes have helped make this the most successful year ever. As we enter our sixth year of promoting Ontario festivals and events, the number of event web visitors to our websites has increased from 160,000 last year to over 340,000 this year. The month of October saw the most event web visitors at 43,799. What is most rewarding is that we see substantial increases in visitors each month. Our overall target for 2012 is to attract over 500,000 event web visitors. A tall order, I know, but one that I believe is attainable!

The future looks bright and very busy! As most of you know, 2012 is the War of 1812 Bicentennial. Judi and I are looking forward to becoming very involved in the promotion of all of the Bicentennial activities and events. It should prove to be an interesting and fun-filled year!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nomadsblog.ontariofestivalsvisited.ca/2012/01/2012-wow-continued.html' title='2012... These included websites for Fairs, Communities, Heritage Properties and Attractions. All are doing well and attracting web visitors. We also created a “portal” website, Ontario Visited at www.ontariovisited.ca. This website allows visitors access to all our websites, blogs and newsletters with ease. In addition to the above websites, we have created two more, Ontario Event Calendar and Ontario Event Finder (search engine). Each of these websites has been designed to allow festival goers access to Ontario festival and event information. These websites contain information about hundreds of Ontario festivals and events. If you know of any that aren't included, please let us know.

(To Be Continued)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nomadsblog.ontariofestivalsvisited.ca/2011/12/2012-wow.html' title='2012... The best laid plans can go array. For example …one of the reindeer might catch a cold, our communications system might “crash”, my ovens could quit before the baking is done. That is why we take the time to have such a comprehensive “Master Plan” from the beginning. We are prepared for most unforeseen eventualities. We re-print the copies for Santa’s routes (and alternate routes), we bring extra batteries for our communications, we bring extra warm clothing (in case Santa gets dirty climbing down a chimney), and even some extra “munchies” for the reindeer (in case they get hungry while Santa is in eating cookies and warm milk). FN: I asked Santa this question last year, but I wanted to know from you … after the Big Event, what do you, Mr. Claus and the Elves do to “wrap-up” Christmas? MC: My first priority after the Big Event is to re-group with Mr. Claus and the Elves, to go over our "Master Plan". We like to see what went well, and perhaps what did not go well, take notes. These notes begin the process of creating next year's "Master Plan", hopefully new and improved! After all, we want folks to keep enjoying this Big Event. I would also like to say that I take great comfort in being “home”! Safe and sound with all the people I know and love. I wish you, Festival Nomad, and your family and all of your Festival and Event Friends, a safe, healthy and happy Holiday Season!(See You Next Year!)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nomadsblog.ontariofestivalsvisited.ca/2011/12/interview-with-mrs-s-claus_20.html' title='Interview With Mrs. S. With the Elves in the workshop, Santa in the exercise room (trying to get in shape for his big journey) and me in the kitchen baking, we keep on top of our “Master Plan” by communicating with one another is a must! We constantly have to adapt our communications methods as technology changes over the years. Back in the day, we used tin cans strung together with string to yell through. Then there was the dial telephone, megaphone, party-lines, and more. Now there is on-line, instant communications. They have created a “Webcam” where we can see one another as we communicate. Texting is fun, although I love the voice activated method (my hands are usually sticky from baking).
As for Santa, his biggest, biggest challenge is DIRECTIONAL SIGNAGE. Of course, Santa knows where all the good little girls and boys live, but with such a large population, many similar homes, similar street names … he does have a challenge finding way sometimes. Modern technology offers GPS, but with Santa’s large gloves on, it can be a distraction pressing the buttons. Santa tries hard to “Pre-Plan” his routes. He makes alternative route plans in case of too much snow on a roof top for the reindeer. I must say though, Santa finds all the Christmas lights and decorations helpful.

FN: I have noticed over the past few years that you are attending and participating in some Christmas Parades. Would you rather be riding in them or watching from the comfort of your cozy cabin? And, what is your favorite part of the parade?

MC: Well, I am pleased and proud to be riding in a few Christmas Parades. It gives me a chance to see first hand the excitement of all the children (young and old). With modern technology, I can leave my baking on automatic timing, so I can take the time to get out more. I stay warm and cozy in the parades by dressing in lots of layers, drink warm coco from a thermos and keep my feet dry. I love getting out and visiting our Communities. It helps keep me “in-touch” and well informed. I like to see our “New Canadians” and folks from many diverse backgrounds out taking part in this tradition. My favorite part of the parade most likely is the music! … from the marching bands and the beat of their drums to the children and choirs singing together.
(To Be Continued)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nomadsblog.ontariofestivalsvisited.ca/2011/12/interview-with-mrs-s-claus_13.html' title='Interview With Mrs. S. I’m sure that over the year you must help Mr. Claus with the planning for the Big Night! Can you tell me what the first things you and Mr. Claus do to prepare for the Big Event?

Mrs. Claus (MC): Well Festival Nomad, I am very good at coming up with ideas. Lots and lots of them! You know… little extra touches and surprises to make the Big Event fantastic! There is a lot of hustle and bustle as the event draws near. Mr. Claus and the Elves also have their own ideas, plans and duties. The Elves' tasks range from to the building of the toys and treasures to the wrapping of the presents, Santa’s tasks are to plan the distribution of the gifts, training and conditioning routines for himself and the Reindeer. Between all of us involved, it can become very confusing. So, I make a LIST. I call it Mrs. Claus’s Master Plan.

FN: Lately I’ve noticed that there seems to be a lot of advertizing, promoting Christmas. How much of this is initiated by you and Santa and how much of it is spontaneous?

MC: I’ve heard that there are “Secret Santa’s” out there. It is my understanding that these folks help make sure a special person gets a special gift. Santa, the Elves and I make no effort to disguise how magical Christmas can be. When I have been out shopping for my baking ingredients, I have overheard some folks being “grumpy” about all the Christmas decorations, and such, coming out so soon in the season. They say it’s too much “commercialism” these days. It is my sincere hope that these extra efforts will only increase the goodwill and kindness that usually is evoked in many folks. The longer communities can be aware to help others less fortunate and be kind to one another, the better for everyone! I’ve heard that some Festivals and Events, during the festival season, encourage folks to bring canned goods, non-perishable food, warm clothing, toys and such out to their events. An example is a communities “Lighting of the Tree Ceremonies”. I understand also that some companies match dollar for dollar if their employees donate to charity efforts for this special time of the year. So, Festival Nomad, I would like to think that advertising and promotion can be a blessing in disguise. People become aware sooner and seem to open their hearts and goodwill.
(To Be Continued)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nomadsblog.ontariofestivalsvisited.ca/2011/12/interview-with-mrs-s-claus.html' title='Interview With Mrs. S. With this new series, "INSIDE with the Festival Nomad", I want to give you an "inside" look at some of the festivals and events that I have been involved with or that I have visited. Along the way, I have had a lot of fun and sometimes frustration, but I have never been bored!

Back Door... (Part Two)

Then there was our visit to the Assiniboine Zoo in Winnipeg. Once again we were treated to the inner workings of the Zoo. I must say, it was fascinating. It certainly gave Judi and me a better appreciation of just how well loved the animals were and how well cared for they were cared for. It was an unforgettable experience! Perhaps the most insightful “Back Door” experience was at the Toronto Zoo. We not only got to experience the inner workings of the Zoo, but we were able to talk to the Zoo's main Zookeepers. The amount of knowledge they collectively had was awesome. I think what impressed me the most was their willingness (and eagerness) to share their knowledge and experiences. Apart from Zoo and Aquarium "Back Door" visits, one of my most memorable encounters was meeting and talking with the Cincinnati Zoo’s “Jack Hanna”. I was attending a large art show in Charleston, South Carolina (the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition [SEWE]). Jack seemed to be the same “in person” as he is on “TV”. He was fun, chatty and knowledgeable and, of course, he had an array of animals to show us!

This is the last of my “Inside with the Festival Nomad” articles. As you can see, Judi and I have had great experiences! Our next Blog will be about an amazing interview we just had with a very famous person. Stay tuned!

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 38)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. As Festival enthusiasts, we have been able to talk to and interview many interesting and some famous people. I think Judi’s interview with Terry Grant, aka THE MANTRACKER, best illustrates this. (Click HERE to read article)However, as Fine Art travelers, I think our “Back Door” adventures were more spectacular! Take, for instance, our visit to the Vancouver Aquarium. At the Aquarium we were taken “underground”, behind the scenes, to see and experience the real workings of the aquarium and its residents. We saw how the fish and animals were fed; how they were cared for and how they lived. I was amazed by the number of pipes that ran underground! Ii looked like a tangled maze, but each served a specific function! The people at the Aquarium were amazing and took a great deal of pride in showing their facility.
(To Be Continued)

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 37)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. There was panic in the halls of Parliament! Eventually Minister Bouchard was replaced by the Robert de Cotret, Minister of the Environment and the ceremony in Banff was back on! Michael and I flew to Calgary and then drove to Banff and checked into our hotel. The ceremony was to take place the next day. We arrived at the appointed place, at the appointed time and participated in the ceremony. I think it took about 15 minutes. Michael and I had flown a thousand miles or more to a ceremony that took only a few minutes! Fortunately, it was all the expense of the Canadian Government and, of course, the Canadian Taxpayer. Michael and I had a great time! One of the benefits was that the tickets we purchased made us stay in Banff over a weekend. We toured the area in our rented car and ate some great meals. It was a time for me to get to know Michael, the person, as well as Michael, the fabulous artist. I can tell you, travelling the countryside with Michael is an awesome experience. I learned more about nature and wildlife in a few hours then I could have by reading many books in a lifetime!

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 37)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. One of the projects I worked for with Ed, was with the Canadian Parks Partnership. This was the Federal Government’s department that coordinated with all of the "Friends of" organizations for the Federal Parks and Museums across Canada. Ed and his star wildlife artist, Michael Dumas, had developed a series of prints that depicted Canadian wildlife. These prints were beautifully packaged and were going to be offered in Park and Museum stores across Canada. My job was to help promote these products to all of the “Parks Partners – Friends”. To introduce this National program, the Federal Government decided that they would “kick” the program off in Banff. Edwin asked me if I would accompany Michael to Banff and the “kick-off” ceremonies. I, of course, was delighted to accept the offer. The ceremony was to be officiated by the then Federal Minister, Lucian Bouchard. As described on Wikipedia, "In 1988, Bouchard returned to Canada to serve as Mulroney's Quebec lieutenant, and was elected as a Progressive Conservative from a Saguenay-area riding. He was immediately named to Cabinet as Secretary of State and later Minister of the Environment. While still a strong Quebec nationalist, he believed that Mulroney's Meech Lake Accord was sufficient to placate nationalist feelings and keep Quebec in Confederation. However, after a commission headed by Jean Charest recommended some changes to the Accord, Bouchard left the Progressive Conservatives in May 1990, feeling that the spirit and objectives of Meech were being diluted. Mulroney rejected his reasoning, later commenting that his most regrettable and costly error as Prime Minister was having trusted Bouchard. Bouchard sat as an independent for a few months. After the failure of the Meech Lake Accord, Bouchard formed the sovereignist Bloc Québécois with five former Tories and two former Liberals." Our airplane tickets were purchased, hotel reservations confirmed and automobile rented! Everything was set!
(To Be Continued)

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 36)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. Along the way, I have had a lot of fun and sometimes frustration, but I have never been bored!

The Biggies and More...
Judi and I have attended and volunteered at a number of fundraising auction dinners. These are a lot of fun and, of course, raise money for worthwhile causes. In the next few articles I am going to tell you about two of the larger and more interesting fundraising dinners we have visited and about some of the funny things that we have seen at other fundraising auctions we have attended!

National Rifle Association Annual Meeting (Pittsburgh - Continued)
In the morning the hall was inspected to make sure that everything was just right. At noon the doors were open and people came streaming in. Judi and I had been asked if we would run one of the games, which we gladly did. It was both hectic and a lot of fun. The enthusiasm of the participants was infectious. Eventually everyone was asked to find their table and take a seat. The meal was served with military precision and was delicious. During the meal silent auction winners were announced, as were draw winners. Near the end of the meal the “live” auction began. As the auctioneer described what was being offered, large screens showed the auction item. With that, the auction began in earnest! It’s hard to imagine how much money was spent, that day, but a lot! Then, just as quickly as the event began, it ended. As I mentioned before, people where asked to leave the hall without delay, so the Secret Service and bomb sniffing dogs could begin their work!

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 36)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events.

If you have never been to a really large banquet (several thousand attendees), then you’ve missed something really spectacular! The NRA Conference luncheon was no exception! Although I don’t know the exact number of people in attendance, I would estimate that there were over 3,000. Each of these types of banquets include a meal (of course), silent and live auctions, draws, games and presentations. It takes a lot of work for just a small event (just ask any Ducks Unlimited committee member), so you can imagine the effort put into an event like this! Frankly, it was amazing! It all started the evening before, when most of the hall was set up. Games surrounded much of the perimeter of the hall, along with tables of silent auction merchandise. There were also tables displaying prizes that could be won in one of the many draws. Nearer the main stage, was the focus point, with all kinds of fantastic “live” auction items. Proudly, we had framed and donated quite a few.
(To Be Continued)

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 36)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. Bush, Dick Cheney. I’ve been to a number of high profile events, but nothing, in my experience, compared to this! There were police, secret service and police dogs everywhere! Even though Vice President Cheney wasn’t due to speak until later that evening, the banquet room was constantly being “swept” when the room was being set-up for the lunch banquet. As a matter of fact, Judi spoke during the morning set-up with a Pittsburgh police officer who told her some of what was happening. Once the luncheon was over, everyone was ordered out of the hall and then a thorough inspection was performed. No one was allowed back into the hall until the doors were opened for the evening event. Judi and I did not have tickets to the evening event, but Sam and his wife, Sandy, did. Sam later told us what happened at the event. When they arrived, all the guests had to stay outside the hall in a reception area. They stayed there for quite some time but eventually were allowed in. Cheney was scheduled to speak in person to the group. A large screen had been set up ready for Cheney’s speech so that everyone could see the Vice President. The crowd waited patiently for the Vice President to appear! Nothing!! Finally there was an announcement that the Vice President would not appear in person, but would give his speech from a different room (undisclosed location). The speech would be broadcast over the large screen. I am sure most of those in attendance must have been very disappointed, after all, Cheney was the main draw to the event! I am sure that there must have been a good reason for this drastic change, after all, the safety of the Vice President came first! I would not want to have been him!
(To Be Continued)

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 36)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. Its mandate is based on the Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution being part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. It was adopted on December 15, 1791 along with the rest of the Bill or Rights. It is, as you can imagine, a controversial organization. Each year, as I mentioned in last weeks blog, the NRA holds a national conference. This draws attention to the organization and people against gun rights are drawn to the conference to protest. It was under these circumstances, that Judi and I entered the Pittsburgh Conference Centre where the event was being held that year. Fortunately we were with Sam Pursglove, the then Executive Director of the Ruffed Grouse Society, USA. Sam is a rather large (tall) individual with a booming voice (being a little deaf !), so we were pretty confident that we could safely passed through the protesters to enter the building. Although it was quite intimidating, we did passed through without any problems. The biggest challenge was the noise from the crowd that had gathered. Even from inside the Conference Centre we could hear the protesters! This was democracy at work.
(To Be Continued)

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 36)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. The year we attended it was held in downtown Pittsburg, PA. We had been invited to the conference because our company did all the framing for the Friends of the NRA banquets (nearly a 1,000 in total). As you can imagine, it was a very large and important account to our company and it was important that we attend. Fortunately for us the conference was very well organized and there was very little we were asked to do to help.

The main event that we attended was an afternoon luncheon/auction. This was an event attended by several thousand people. Judi and I were just two of the many. Because our actual involvement was fairly limited, I’m not going to describe the luncheon in detail, but rather I'm going to give you some of the more “interesting” highlights of both the luncheon and the event!
(To Be Continued)

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 36)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. The challenge was to get everyone, first to pay for the goods they purchased (silent and live auctions) and then to get then to leave. There were many who wanted to continue the “party”, while the RGS Staff were tired and just wanted to clean-up. While accounting was doing their work (see previous blog), the rest us started the arduous task of cleaning up and putting equipment away. We also needed to guard the prize area until all the prizes were paid for and then picked up. As I have said in other articles, it is amazing how you seem to have more equipment going out then when coming in! The challenge, of course, is finding the right box, for the right piece of equipment. Fortunately the RGS Staff were very practiced, and everything was eventually packed and made ready to take back to head office. The whole ordeal was very tiring, but, in the end, extremely rewarding!
(Next Week a National Convention)

INSIDE with the Festival Nomad (No. 36)

Over the years I have attended, worked with and organized hundreds of festivals and events. With this new series, "INSIDE with the Festival Nomad", I want to give you an "inside" look at some of the festivals and events that I have been involved with or that I have visited. Along the way, I have had a lot of fun and sometimes frustration, but I have never been bored!

The Warren Michigan Banquet (Accounting)...
As I mentioned previously, Judi was assigned, by Sam, to the accounting table. Although keeping everyone until the end of the evening is beneficial for financial reasons, (bidders stay and bid), checking out is another story. To my surprise, most of the folks paid for their purchases with CASH! United States paper money cash! To me, all the money looked the same. I had been in the financial industry in downtown Toronto for 10 years, so I would have liked to think I had some skills with handling money. However, as folks pulled out their wads of money, I was painfully slow at counting it for them. As I mentioned, the $10 looked like the $20’s and so on. I was grateful for the few folks who paid by credit cards, as I was able to assist more quickly!”
(To Be ConTinued)
